Former Burton Albion defender Kelvin Maynard was shot and killed in Amsterdam, Dutch authorities have confirmed.
The 32-year-old was shot in his vehicle as they look for two suspects who they say escaped onto a black scooter and police are appealing for witnesses.
Physicians from a fire station attempted to help Maynard but he afterwards died of his injuries.
The Dutch-Surinamese participant, who had a spell at Royal Antwerp, was in non-league Dutch club Alphense Boys.
Maynard joined Burton in November 2014 following Dutchman Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s appointment as director.
Injury confined him to 10 appearances before he was ruled out for the effort after suffering a knee injury at a pre-season game as the Brewers won the League Two title.
He abandoned Burton in January 2017 to combine Dutch side Spakenburg.
