Myth of Sports Betting: The “Fix”

The”fix” is a widespread belief among amateur bettors. Every now and accusations of a repair make it into esteemed magazines and books.

I don’t feel that NFL games are fixed and here’s why. First, within the last 25 years, I’ve known a number of handicappers, including myself, who have won money gambling the NFL. If the matches were not fair, we could not have won. Handicapping simply couldn’t overcome players that were shaving or dumping things. Second, in order to fix a game, two events would need to occur. The fixer would have to get important players involved, and be in a position to wager enough to conquer the obligations he has made to the players that are crooked.

Over the previous 15 years, NFL salaries have skyrocketed. Important players, who would need to be in on the correct in order for it to work, make well into the millions every year. They create from advertisements and endorsements. It might cost a lot of money to get to such players. And you could never correct a game with a single player ; at least a few would have to purchased.

The fixer would then need to bet enough on the game to turn a profit on the deal. In order to bet this large he would need to use hundreds or even thousands of bookmakers.

And bookmakers would certainly notice when they saw this tidal wave of cash coming in on one team. As the money came in from all over the country, bookmakers are able to put off the cash with different bookmakers. When enormous money comes in from seemingly nowhere it is called unnatural cash, and bookmakers are always doubtful about it. With numerous countless suddenly coming in, suspicion could be uncontrolled.

When bookmakers see unnatural money, they take games off the board until they know the reason behind this. And there is almost always a fair explanation. Occasionally it’s an accident which comes to light. Sometimes a big name in gambling likes the group.

Bookmakers, who themselves depend on accurate handicapping, understand the only way that they can survive is for NFL games to be honest. Coups, such as the ones who have tarnished school basketball from time to time, could wipe them out. Bookmakers are the first to turn.

Believers in repairs also point to referees as possible offenders. Since referees make much less cash than players and exert great control over matches, this may be achievable except for two items.

First, the NFL does a really close background check on possible referees. Before anyone is allowed to ref NFL games, a great deal of strong sources have to consider him bribe-proof.

Second, sources in Las Vegas keep documents on which referees function which matches and correlate the information with any large cash that comes in on a match. If any questionable correlation between a particular ref and unnatural currency turned up, it could be reported immediately to the NFL.

Don’t use the correct as an excuse to lose. Rather, get to work in your handicapping.
