Reach her first Grand Slam semi-final and switzerland’s Belinda Bencic put friendship aside to defeat the Donna Vekic of Croatia at the US Open.
The 13th seed, that knocked out defending champion Naomi Osaka in the preceding round, won 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 from her good friend.
She will face Bianca Andreescu or Elise Mertens .
The 22-year-old will now return to the top 10 of the world rankings for the very first time in more than three years.
Before accidents and wrist operation left her since low as 328th she reached a career-high seventh in February 2016.
“I dreamed of this like a small child so now that I’m here I’m really liking it,” said Bencic, who finished a five-year wait to improve her previous best Grand Slam showing of a US Open quarter-final.
Bencic, that had been knocked out of the French Open by Vekic at May, got the better of her hitting partner now round in a match full of baseline rallies.
Vekic, 23, had her chance in the first set, in which she broke in the ninth game but failed to serve it out, with it going into a tie-break, which Bencic took charge of.
The Swiss broke twice in the second set, when Vekic hit a forehand wide, sealing success.
The group shared a warm embrace in the internet and Bencic was confident their friendship would survive.
“We’re both professional enough to be friends from the court and competitive on the court,” Bencic stated. “I believe we did well. I’m sure the court off we are friends ”
