Hit her first Grand Slam semi-final and switzerland’s Belinda Bencic place friendship aside to beat the Donna Vekic of Croatia in the US Open.
Even the 13th seed, who knocked out defending champion Naomi Osaka from the prior round, won 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 from her good friend.
She’ll confront Elise Mertens or Bianca Andreescu next.
The 22-year-old will return to the top 10 of the world rankings for the very first time in more than three years.
Before wrist operation and accidents left her reduced as 328th she attained a career-high seventh.
“I dreamed of the like a small kid so I’m here I’m really liking it,” explained Bencic, that finished a five-year wait to improve on her previous best Grand Slam showing of a US Open quarter-final.
Bencic, who had been knocked from the French Open by Vekic at May, got the better of her hitting partner now round in a match filled with baseline rallies.
Vekic, 23, had her opportunity at the first set, in which she broke in the game but didn’t serve it out, with it eventually going to some tie-break, that Bencic took charge of.
The Swiss broke in the next group, sealing victory on her third match point when Vekic hit a forehand wide.
The pair shared a warm embrace and Bencic was confident their friendship would last.
“We’re both professional enough to make friends from the court and aggressive on the court,” Bencic explained. “I believe we did well. I’m sure off the court we are friends still.”
