N Ireland vs Luxembourg
7:45pm Thursday 5th September
A horror goal from Kevin Malget has been sufficient to give an experimental Northern Ireland side a 1-0 victory over Luxembourg.
Malget inexplicably headed into his own net eight minutes before half-time to settle a match short on quality as both sides looked to challenges to come on Monday.
For Northern Ireland, that is really a Euro 2020 qualifier from Germany, a game which loomed large as he sprung a couple of surprises at a beginning line-up.
Cardiff defender Ciaron Brown – called into Ian Baraclough squad and only uncapped at any given level – started and looked guaranteed as O’Neill made eight changes to the side that beat Belarus.
Corry Evans, captain for the night time, survived, Together with goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Josh Magennis, however Craig Cathcart Jonny Evans and Conor Washington did not make the squad.
Instead, Ethan Galbraith, Alfie McCalmont and the uncapped Bobby Burns took their positions.
They’d take the lead until the break because of Malget’s own aim, although o’Neill’s side wouldn’t be able to shoot on goal from the opening 45 minutes.
After Luxembourg failed to take care of a corner george Saville headed the ball back in the mix. It span up before Malget, though goalkeeper Moris conquer Tom Flanagan to the chunk.
With Leandro Martins and Vincent Thill getting the shots on target of the night luxembourg were stronger to begin the second half , but neither tested Peacock-Farrell.
Liam Donnelly – who has five goals to Motherwell to begin the year – arrived in the second half to his second cap and got his first global goal shortly after.
Northern Ireland now host Germany in European Qualifiers Group C, dwell on Sky Sports Main Event on Monday at 7.45pm.
